Welcome haunters! Every week we share a look behind one home haunter’s inspirational build and how it came together.
Let’s dig into this week’s build!
Jonathan Maybon and his wife Shawna both have creative hearts and minds and enjoy making spooky stuff for Halloween.
Jonathan first became interested in making his own Halloween props after a friend in the service shared his love of making them in order to see strangers smile when they walked up his drive. It was contagious.
This is his first time attempting animated props and he went for it with his very own animated Dog Pulling My Leg prop.
Keep reading for details. You can follow him on Instagram to see other builds he and Shawna are tackling including a new one inspired by their 10-year-old son!
Inside Jonathan’s Build

Build Details:
You’ll need both a dog and a human skeleton (both can be found at Home Depot, etc.) and a tombstone to cover the motor assembly. All of the movement is controlled by one wiper motor. Each floor anchor is hinged (dog’s feet and skeleton). The wrists are hooked to the bone which is bolted through the dog’s mouth.
Q&A
What inspired you to build this?
The DIY Animated Halloween Props Facebook Group had a couple of people in particular who shared their builds of the same style of prop that I spent a lot of time scrutinizing. These two videos (1, 2 - only visible to members of the group) made a great instructional and made making my own prop pretty simple and straightforward.
What techniques and products were used?
I ordered my wiper motor kit from Monster Guts. They really have a great selection of items to animate your props and have made the task easy with their instructional videos.
What was the trickiest part of the build? How’d you solve it?
There were a few things I had to improvise but nothing that a little creativity can’t fix! I included some of my own pictures that address most of those solutions, and please forgive the euphemism, there are a thousand ways to skin a cat. 🐈⬛
